Elevate VR provides children and adolescents with an immersive storyline and tasks to increase their resilience to violent behavior. By teaching evidence-based practices, youth develop skills to increase their ability to regulate emotions, navigate online conflict, develop future aspirations, and learn about school safety. Elevate VR is one of the first VR youth mental health programs funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at NIH.
Elevate VR leverages the power of gamification and immersive storytelling to engage youth in violence prevention education. By placing users in the role of a hero navigating various social challenges, the program makes learning interactive and relatable. The immersive environment allows users to practice decision-making and conflict resolution in everyday scenarios without real-world consequences. This approach improves engagement and retention, as well as increases personal investment in the learning process. By making these skills feel relevant and applicable to their everyday lives, Elevate VR enhances motivation to apply them outside the virtual world.
Elevate VR is grounded in evidence-based practices that are proven to reduce violence and promote positive behaviors. Elevate VR integrates cognitive-behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, and social-emotional learning to build critical skills such as emotional regulation, problem-solving, and empathy. Each chapter is designed to address specific risk factors associated with violence, such as impulsivity, poor decision-making, and lack of conflict resolution skills. By repeatedly practicing these skills in a safe, controlled environment, participants can internalize healthier behaviors and attitudes, which they can then carry into their daily interactions.
One of the unique features of Elevate VR is its use of biofeedback to help participants become more aware of their physiological responses to stress and conflict. By monitoring heart rate and other indicators, the program teaches users to recognize when they are becoming emotionally overwhelmed and how to use techniques such as deep breathing and mindfulness to calm down. This real-time feedback reinforces self-regulation skills, helping youth manage their emotions effectively and avoid reactive, aggressive behaviors. This focus on physiological awareness bridges the gap between mental and physical responses to stress, promoting holistic well-being.
Elevate VR emphasizes positive youth development by encouraging participants to cultivate skills and attributes that promote a healthy, productive, and engaged lifestyle. Through interactive scenarios, youth explore key domains of positive development, such as competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring. The program challenges participants to make choices that align with their personal values and future aspirations, fostering a sense of purpose and direction. By focusing on building strengths rather than simply avoiding risks, Elevate VR empowers youth to become proactive in shaping their own lives and contributing to their communities.
